Year 10 Football v Brannel

Having only played one previous game in a cup loss against Saltash, Newquay Tretherras really needed a result today. With players dropping out late, we had to make last minute decisions to field a team. Thankfully, Harry Downing and Rian Faulkner from year 9 agreed to play. The game started with good football from both sides! Good build up play by Tretherras led to Kieran Rowland knocking a great over the top ball resulting in a good finish by Cameron Burt . Shortly after Brannel caught Tretherras on a counter attack leading to a 1 on 1 chance, but the Brannel player hit it just over the cross bar. Tretherras quickly knew they needed to get a second as the game was getting tense. The ball was spread out wide to Zac Murphy crossing it in for a simple placement finish by Cam Burt again. Tretherras then got a free kick about 30 yards out, Kieran Rowland stepped up and just skimmed the cross bar. Brannel fought against this and got a goal back shortly after, with a player out pacing ours and swiftly finished it. Brannel were playing well and drawing our players out of the game. Michael Harding did a good job covering and made a great tackle just before the half time whistle. The score remained at 2-1 at the end of the first half. With no substitutions made, the line up stayed the same. Good pressure from Brannel, but Harry Downing making a crunching challenge keeping Tretherras in the game. Rian Faulkner comfortably won every ball in the air and was able to set up Newquay into an attacking position. With an intense game and the next goal possibly deciding the game, Zac Murphy playing a central midfield role, took the ball, had time and played a nice ball through to George Kent, who converted to make it 3-1. Not long afterwards, Brannel were quick catching Tretherras out on a break. Rapid pace from their striker, through 1 on 1 with keeper ( Cullen Angus ) but Harry Downing again, took the ball in a critical situation. He played it to Luke Humphreys on the edge of The 18 yard box, ran a few yards then spotted Zac Murphy and laid the ball to his feet just beyond the half way line, Zac then stroked the ball through to George Kent who swiftly took it around the keeper leaving an open goal and scoring. 2nd for George with good play before that, at a fast pace. Brannel had a few good runs again, and it came to the last final couple of minutes. Cavan Whitehouse played the ball to luke humphreys on the edge of the box, Luke then played an over the top ball to Harry Varcoe. This resulted in a great goal by Harry to make it 5-1. Brannel had a last attempt but Rian Faulkner defended well clearing the ball. It was full time. It was an enjoyable game for both teams with no warnings or booking, and good football from both teams. Thanks too the ref as well. Cheers to Mr Johnston for arranging the friendly, well played sir. Good game overall.

Newquay Tretherras 5-1 Brannel.
