The Newquay Tretherras U18 football squad travelled to Treyew Road, home of Truro City to play Budehaven School in the Final of the Cornwall Schools Football Association Under 18 League Cup on Thursday 8th May.
The mixed weather conditions varied the style of play for both teams, who battle to control possession. After conceding an early goal within the first ten minutes, Tretherras fought back well to lead 2-1 at half time, through goals from Callum McOnie and Ross London.
Resolute defending early in the second half was rewarded when McOnie grabbed his second and Tretherras’ third following some fine counter attacking football.
McOnie went on to complete his hat trick to put Tretherras in a comfortable 4-1 lead with 10 minutes to go. Cup Final pressure gave Budehaven two late goals which made for a tense finish. In the final moments of the game Budehaven launched two near misses at goal, but the now focused Tretherras defence held the final score at Tretherras 4 Budehaven 3.
It was an excellent game of Under 18′s schools football played and officiated in an excellent spirit, with two well-matched teams both playing their part.
Mr Craig Richards, Head of PE at Newquay Tretherras commented, “I am extremely pleased for every member of the squad. They all contributed fantastically in what was an excellent performance. The boys can look back on an excellent season, and we still have an outside chance of winning the league”.
