Newquay Tretherras students put the finishing touches to a prickly design project that has been donated to Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue Center in Cubert.

The Year 9 students spent the last 6 weeks designing and making some hedgehog hibernation boxes as part of their conservation module in Design and Technology at Newquay Tretherras.

The budding designers were set the task to building a hibernation box for the under threat hedgehog out of HDPE offcuts, a type of plastic, generously donated to them by Outdoor Play People in St Columb Major.

Mr Hudson, teacher of DT explained, ‘The students have really embraced this module of work and spent a lot of time and care in completing the boxes. Once finished the students felt that the best thing to do was to donate the boxes to Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue Center in Cubert. They do absolutely fantastic work rescuing and rehabilitating sick, underweight and injured hedgehogs from across Cornwall, that the students felt that this was a great way to support them.’

The Newquay Tretherras students were lucky enough to visit the rescue centre to deliver the hibernation boxes and meet a couple of the residents who would be making use of the boxes sometime soon!

Mr Hudson added, ‘Our thanks go to Outdoor Play People for donating us such wonderful materials as well as Prickles and Paws for allowing the students to visit and learn more about the wonderful little hedgehogs’.
