Please Be Aware – Suspected Bacterial Meningitis – Sixth Form Student

Suspected

3rd March 2016

Dear Parents and Carers

I write to let you know that we have had some information from Royal Cornwall Hospital following a serious illness suffered by one of our Y12 students. The diagnosis is suspected bacterial meningitis so we have checked with the hospital, the PCT and the Health Protection Agency to get best advice. The Health Protection Agency is responsible for ensuring that schools know exactly what to do in such circumstances. They advise that the risk to adults and children here at school is very low. They are not recommending that school takes any action other than to send this letter. Our local surgeries have also been informed so that they can look out for any associated problems.

Please click on the following link https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/meningococcal-disease-guidance-data-and-analysis giving parents detailed advice on this matter.
Additional information on protecting yourself against meningitis is outlined in the following NHS pdf https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/438674/PHE_9268_MenW_leaflet_2015_8pages_09_web_cr.pdf

Parents who need further details or further reassurance on this matter are advised to contact their own GP or the Health Protection Agency.

If you have any further concerns please contact the school.

Yours sincerely

Mrs S Martin

Executive Headteacher
