A group of Newquay Tretherras boys are taking part in the Sky Sports Living for Sport project and as part of it are being mentored by Olympic Bronze Medalist Cassie Patten. The scheme is a secondary schools initiative that uses sport stars and sport skills to boost confidence, change behaviours, increase attainment and improve life skills.
As a direct result last week, 25 Tretherras students received their first mentoring session with the Olympic medalist last week.
In her first session with boys, the Olympic mentor gave a brief discussion about her motivations and told the challenges she faced in pursuit of her dreams. Later the group started their first practical sports session. The project will develop over the next couple of months and Cassie will be working closely with the boys on experiencing variations of football-based games.
At the end of the practical Cassie handed around her Bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Cassie commented, “I’m really looking forward to working with the Tretherras students. They have started with lots of enthusiasm. The next few weeks will be very exciting as we begin to work on their projects.”
