Last week, Newquay Tretherras became one of only three schools in the country to begin offering a new vocational course based around the Edexcel Skilled For Life qualifications.
The school invited a number of local industry professionals to discuss the project and how they will work together to offer an alternative educational route to school leavers.
The course will combine classroom study as well as time in a practical work placement, providing students with real life work experience and consequently improving their employability.
Students will have complete freedom over which vocational route they choose as well as being able to pick and choose the units of their course that they are most interested in studying.
Mr Dave Nicholls, Lead Teacher of Applied Learning said, “This is one of the most exciting developments in education that I’ve ever had the opportunity to be involved with.”
He continued, “The meeting with employers went really well. Everyone that attended signed up meaning we can offer placements in varying fields across the construction industry as well as some excellent ones within local hospitality. It’s excellent to be able to work alongside local businesses to ensure our students get the best opportunities to succeed.”
Tretherras are still looking for more employers to get involved. If you would be interested in joining the programme, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
