Local Primary schools Newquay Junior, Newlyn East, St Columb minor, Cubert, Bishops, Mawgan-in-Pydar, Goonhavern, Perranporth and Trevisker all took part in the Newquay Tretherras Primary Swimming Festival.
A total of 144 swimmers took part in the swim festival at Water World and were marshaled by 26 Newquay Tretherras Sports Leaders from Year 10.
A total of 16 teams of Year 5 and 6 students, from the 9 schools raced in varing swimming events. The teams made of 4 boys and 4 girls from each school competed in front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and front crawl relay.
Mr Craig Hayes, Headteacher at Goonhavern commented, “It’s fantastic event and the children benefit from it very much. Mr John Scott does a fantastic job of organizing the event and the Tretherras Sports Leaders do a great job in supporting the younger children.”
Paralympic Swimmer Ben Potter, who has recently qualified for this year’s world championship, presented certificates to students and winning teams.
Winners of events were as follows; Year 5 girls won by Newquay Junior, Year 5 boys won by Goonhavern, Year 6 girls won by Newquay Junior, Year 6 boys won by Newquay Junior.
Overall winners were Newquay Junior, 2nd Mawgan-in-Pydar , 3rd St Columb Minor.
Newquay Junior and Mawgan-in-Pydar will now go onto the next stage of the Cornwall School Games.
